Live video streaming for bad-weather business continuity
Published: 03 December 2010
Innovative use of live video streaming has ensured that Central Scotland Ballet School's students can continue take dance classes, even from home!
Our client Central Scotland Ballet School uses a wide range of community venues to deliver dance classes to around 600 students throughout east and central Scotland. Due to the recent heavy snow in the area, all their venues have been closed, and all local dance classes had to be cancelled this week.
With students and staff stranded in their own homes, CSBS Director Amanda-Louise Clark broadcast a jazz dance class live from her own home.
Escrivo set up and configured the streaming services required to make the event happen, and provided technical support during the live event to ensure it ran smoothly. Promoted at short notice, the live online dance class went well, with 30 connections to the live video stream -and feedback suggests that in many cases more than one participant was on each connection.
The event has has had a very positive reception from students and parents, and if the bad weather continues, there are likely to be more dance classes streamed.
Amanda-Louise said: "With the continuing bad weather, the live online broadcast has opened up several new opportunities for us. It has helped us stay in touch with our students this week, and has shown us yet another way to use the internet to promote and enhance our business."
Cameron Leask, managing director of Escrivo said: "the emphasis on this occasion was on making pragmatic use of the technology available, rather than making significant investments in hardware or software. Using easily-available tools, a cheap webcam and an old coffee table, we were able to deliver an effective solution in an emergency situation for CSBS - which also demonstrated that it's possible to stream live video from a low-bandwidth rural ADSL connection, using relatively basic equipment."
